Video: Union City Celebrates Philippine Independence

Hundreds gathered to join community leaders and international entertainers during the Kalayaan Festival 2012 at Union City's Kennedy Park.

For the first time in its history, organizers held the Kalayaan Festival in Union City. Hundreds of Bay Area residents gathered to join community leaders and international entertainers for the June 10 celebration, which marked the anniversary of Philippine indepence from Spanish colonial rule.

Held at the , the festival kicked off a week of activities and other events.

According to Arnold Pedrigal, chairperson for the festival, this year's activities focuses on youth and a "New Generation of Heroes" to inspire youth to take on leadership roles in their communities.

Saturday's event showcased Filipino food, culture, art, business, speeches from local officials and performances from locals youth and community groups.
