I literally walk to that dispensary from my house, but I fear the more awareness it gets the more likely it'll be shut down, I'm thinkin' we should try and keep it on the dl.

@ Tim: What does medical marijuana and having a job have to do with this? Smoking doesn't mean someone is unemployed.

no it doesn't but there's a strong correlation between getting high every day and being a lazy, unemployed bum.

@Tim... Do you have some documentation to back that up or are you just spewing inaccurate hate to take up space? Sounds to me like some nonsensical generalizations.
I'm pretty sure this location closing has nothing to due with the MMJ debate and more to do with what the heck our city ISN'T doing to keep and encourage businesses to stay or to move to Newark.

As someone who works with HR people in various businesses and has helped set up loss control policies I can tell you one of the measures many of my clients take is drug testing. If they are using illegal drugs (without a prescription) they are terminated. If they are high at work, they are terminated. There may be businesses out there that allow their employees to show up to work high and if you can name some then please, by all means.

That said, I've said repeatedly I support you're right to be high as a kite 24/7 so long as you aren't being supported by my tax dollars.

Seems this was an economical issue and 99 out of 100 times, this is between the landlord and tenant. Goldilocks really downsized from having their own entry to sharing a space within a supermarket. Business wise, this is a huge step back, but costs are definitely cut. For what it's worth, they were closed Friday Night, which is a big business night. Now can the city be more active to seek out businesses that are hurting? Sure, can they reduce property owners property tax with the promise to lower rent to tenants? I'm sure it can be worked out. I remember there was another Filipino restaurant and bakery in the Raley's shopping center that closed up maybe 18 months ago, would have thought Goldilocks got some of that business. Its business, just looking at that area, Newark Buffet is thriving, seems busy....by the untrained eye, they might have taken some of Goldilocks business. You can only have so many restaurants at a specific locale. Can the city regulate that? As long as landlords can fill spaces, they don't care.

All this bs over a plant is stupid, there more important issues that need to be addressed. You pot heads can get your smoke somewhere else. This boycott Newark is another stupid, go no where, stunt.

@TIm, so you admit it, no evidence, just your opinion. You have no facts, just prejudice. It's really pathetic. The irony of it is, you probably have no idea how many of the people you know smoke on daily or regular basis, you just think you do. And I'd wager that most of these people also are not in need of your tax dollars, you just think that they must be. The reality is, you have no idea how many people take a toke before setting out in their suits for the day. Clearly pot smokers must be uneducated, unemployed, low income deadbeats in your book, your book is outdated buddy!
There are plenty of Newark businesses that don't care what you do on your own time as long as you meet or exceed their expectations at work. I'm not going to go rattle off the company names so they can just be a target of simpleminded hate.
I personally don't know that Boycotting Newark business is going to impact the city, or that they would even notice. I hope with each new election we vote in the candidates that are willing to explore revenue generating proposals for our city that will benefit us all. Whether it be allowing MMJ dispensaries or just doing more to develop out city and attract/keep businesses and customers. They way I see it, people of the tri cities area have no reason to have to come spend their $ in Newark unless they HAVE to go to the Mall or BJ's. What else is really pulling shoppers in?

Tim, I can't think of ANY business that would tolerate their employees being impaired on the job, regardless of the reason. That said, I don't care what my staff does on their own time. My wife (who uses MMJ) is a successful, self-employed financial consultant. Her use of MMJ has allowed her to continue to work full-time and focus her attention on her clients rather than on the pain.
Your comments are obviously made in ignorance and prejudice. Please, educate yourself if you wish to be taken seriously.

My comments are not of ignorance or prejudice and good for you. I'm not telling you how to run your business. I make a living advising clients who are business owners on loss control policies. Workers compensation insurance costs in CA are among the highest in the nation. Businesses with few employees can have a drastic increase in their experience modification for even one claim depending on the cost. My clients all implement drug testing and a positive drug test is grounds for dismissal. When we investigate claims, often times we see a positive drug test (about 15% of the time). Businesses that I work for, like you, don't care what employees do on their own time, except that they cannot be at work high. So, if they, as Jennifer states above, smoke in the morning before work and show up high, they are a liability and an unacceptable one at that.

I don't understand the anger from you pro-marijuana crowd. I personally don't care about what you do. I'm of the Ron Paul school on drugs. Do what you want to yourself just don't let it impact others. And, showing up to work high DOES impact others.

Perhaps if you're in front of a desk all day at work as a financial consultant like your wife, being high as a kite is just fine (I'd probably find another financial adviser but that's just me). How about the guy operating the crane at the construction site? Do you want him coming to work high? I certainly do not.

Good riddance. I don't think I have EVER been treated as rudely as I was at this Goldilocks. They were so racist in there, they were waiting on people with the correct skin color before everyone else no matter where they were in line. I swore never to frequent that establishment again, and I didn't.

not sure why the closing spurred into a MMJ debate. But saying "boycott newark" is ignorant and stupid. It hurts all of us- business, students, residents and homeowners.
We need to keep our spending in our own city.

Until Newark leaders stop attacking cannabis patients & allow "safe & legal access" to medical marijuana (dispensaries) legal under state law I encourage everyone to join with your neighbors in repudiating this callous, misguided attempt to impose their personal feelings upon us by spending our money elsewhere !!! Tell a friend !!!

Summer, why is almost every comment you make on Patch, no matter what the issue, related to MMJ? You sound ridiculous.

It's not related to "medical marijuana" it's related to "marijuana". Read her comments like the last one above. Doesn't sound like a medical concern to me with thats kind of comment. She's the quintessential abuser of MMJ and good for her. Just be truthful about what this is about, a call for legal recreational use of marijuana.

Better to sound ridiculous than to be ridiculous ! While I've never made a secret of my support for legalization or my enjoyment of this benign plant, legal access for those with a doctor's recommendation is an entirely seperate issue. The only ones trying to confuse these issues are those prohibitionists & propagandists who lack any discernible knowledge on either subject. It's too bad these haters don't have glass belly buttons, then we'd all be able to see what they see !!! As to why I comment on these subjects often,my comments & the comments of those who agree with me,along with your amusing retorts & diatribes keep this important issue fresh in the reader's minds ! Never let anyone forget how Newark's leaders defied state law to deprive it's residents of their legal right to doctor approved medicinal marijuana !!! No one is more hateful or gullible than the divinely delusional amongst us. God doesn't like it when you impose your personal biases on those who vehemently disagree with your views. Spend your hard earned dollars in cities like San Jose & Berkeley that have enlightened adult leadership & encourage everyone you know to do the same. It's the least you can do to salute Tim & Shimadog for their lame comedy routine (they need some new material) even James is funnier than they are !!!

The reason for some locales being nervous about allowing pot clubs in "defying state law" is because to allow them is to defy federal law. Perhaps you should be campaigning for Ron Paul as he has fought for years to legalize marijuana on a federal level. I support your right to be stoned out of your mind 24/7. Just don't apply for government welfare to support you when you can't hold a job.
