While the medical condition of a federal officer who was shot outside of his home has not been released, Newark Detective Sgt. Mike Carroll confirmed Wednesday that Robert Suplik is still alive.

Police have remained tight-lipped about the case — only stating that Suplik was confronted on the 7700 block of Mayhews Landing Road before 5:50 a.m. on Feb. 7 and shot multiple times

Suplik, a U.S Customs and Border Protection officer who was on his way to work, was taken to Eden Medical Center. His family has requested that the status of his medical condition stay private.

Dennis Bagwell, 61, who owns property in Piedmont and Fremont, was arrested five hours later and is and assault with a firearm.

Police documents filed with the Alameda County Superior Court implicated that Bagwell had a “near obsession” with Iryna Smith, Suplik’s wife of three years and a former student of Bagwell's at in Union City.

Authorities said several photos of Smith, 39, were found at Bagwell's Fremont residence. Photos of Smith were also found on Bagwell’s phone. Carroll said Wednesday that “the origin of the photos has not been determined.”

“The motive of the shooting is still unknown, but it appears Mr. Bagwell was infatuated with the officer's wife and ambushed him when the officer was leaving his house,” Carroll said in an email.

Bagwell is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.
